Natural Dye

Black Walnut (Juglans nigra or the Eastern American Black Walnut). This dyestuff is obtained from the husks of the fruit. Black Walnut trees are native to our area in Indiana.  We wild-harvest & process black walnuts ourselves when they drop from the trees each autumn. The hulls are used as a dye & the fruits are passed back to the squirrels.

Black Walnut as a dye material offers a range of colors from soft tan to rich brown depending on % WOF. It yields good depth of color at 75-100% WOF. Black Walnut is a substantive dye and can be used without a mordant. It can be used alone or in combination with other dyes to provide a warm undertone.  It responds well to an iron modifier to produce richer & deeper browns.

Self-foraged & processed by WaZeil & UaZit.
